What I Wish My Teacher Knew... - Due July 22

News Flash!  Teachers always want to help you do your best, but they don't know everything about you!!  You are going to be beginning high school in a month and will need to be able to advocate for yourself.  Remember the self-advocacy assignment you did?  This is where that comes in!  High school teachers teach hundreds of students and don't have time to field phone calls or emails from parents/guardians, but they will certainly have time to speak with you during the day.  It will be up to you to keep track of your own assignments and due dates.  It will be up to you to explain to your teachers (keep in mind that you'll have several teachers in high school) how you learn best.  It will be your responsibility to tell your teachers what you need from them.

Your assignment is to write a one-page, typed, single-spaced, 12-point font, letter to your future teachers telling them how you learn best and what extra support you might need in order to be successful.  You need to be very detailed and you need to be honest.  You'll never get what you need if you don't take it upon yourself to ask.

For example:  when I was in high school I wish my teachers knew that I didn't like to do presentations in front of the class.  I would have been much more comfortable doing presentations just for my teachers.  I also wasn't a fan of doing group work and would have been much happier doing the group assignments on my own.  Although I was a great student I struggled with math.  It would have been helpful if the teacher took time to sit with me one-on-one and explained math to me.  I also need lots of examples in math in order for me to figure things out on my own.  I found it very hard to do my work in class.  I would sit quietly and wouldn't disturb my classmates, but I often would take my work home with me.  I needed to be in my own space and I needed to be in a silent space.  I was a student who didn't like to do work unless I could see how it would be useful in 'real life'.  I would have tried much harder if teachers did a better job of explaining how I would use the materials in the future.
